Sunny September Greetings!
Hopefully you've all had a marvelous summer so far-let's get the most out of these last wonderful warm days; relax, create, and recreate. Batteries recharged? Ready for something very exciting? Our first meeting September 21st, 7:30 pm at the Somerset County Library, is something new. Doris Ettlinger, a watercolorist and children's book illustrator (and writer-we're in the same writing critique group), will be demonstrating the watercolor glazing technique she uses when beginning her illustrations. She'll have 3 versions of a painting especially for us, the drawing alone, half-baked, and the finished painting with a bit of colored pencil added. Doris has been illustrating for 35 years and will bring some of her other books, along with preliminary sketches and the original art for the books. She will also bring copies of THE ORANGE SHOES (hardcover, $18. including tax), one of her books which has just been nominated for its 8th State Reading Award, the Delaware Diamond. The New York State Charlotte Award and the Jefferson Cup Award of Virginia, are among other nominations for this book. Doris' most recent book is ABE LINCOLN LOVED ANIMALS, by Ellen Jackson. Doris always illustrates with watercolor and colored pencil. (your editor has also heard Doris speak at the Bernardsville Library and at Borders; you'll learn and have fun) Hospitality/refreshments for September will be Jane Rosner and Rita Zoltowski. Thank you, Jane and Rita!
DUES ARE DUE! Please send your checks made out to RVAA to our Membership Chairman Doug Axmann, 16 Schoolhouse Lane, Somerville, NJ 08876. Dues are $30. Individual, $35. Family, and $15. Student (through high school). Dues will get you all these demonstrations, two or three exhibits a year (including the Bernardsville Exhibit and our Holiday Extravaganza at the Somerset County Library), the annual Big Apple Trip, the newsletters, a presence on the internet (
www.raritanvalleyarts.org), and last, but not least, lots of camaraderie.
It is time to think about the RVAA November show which will be held at the Bernardsville Library. Enclosed you will find a
registration form
that contains information about the show and an
entry form.
Each artist may submit up to two pieces of work. Receiving will be Monday November 2; take down will be November 30. There will be a reception held on November 8 at the library. To make it a little more fun, a community favorite will be voted upon during the reception at which time a certificate will be presented to the winner. I am looking for volunteers to either help with receiving, take down or to bring a snack to share at the reception. You can contact me (Judy Hummer) at 908-218-1786 if you would like to volunteer. Looking forward to a great show in such a lovely venue.
(your editor thanks Judy for running the show and writing about it above and doing the prospectus. You ALL simply must ENTER this show-it'll be great)
We are sorry to tell you that a current member, Eloise Meade, passed away July 5th. Eloise not only could paint lovely pictures, she was skilled in crafts and quilting, and helped run arts & crafts shows for her church, the Presbyterian Church in Pluckemin. Her keen sense of humor and warm and friendly manners will be sorely missed. With her youthful and energetic ways, you would never have guessed Eloise was 90.
The Dessert Plate Bakery in Somerville is actively seeking local artists to show small to medium sized works in their retail space. There is a 4 piece minimum-all mediums are considered. Please email inquiries along with pictures of work for consideration to:
.
You probably remember Mindy Lighthipe's demo and her work on lovely botanicals. In addition to her website, Mindy now has a blog which this month features Ten Drawing Tips. You can go to
www.studio16online.com to see this.
