RARITAN VALLEY ARTS ASSOCIATION est. 1939

November 2008 Newsletter   President: Linda Arnold

Newsletter: Diana Patton
497 Stony Brook Drive
Bridgewater, NJ 08807

Chillin' out greetings to you all!

But you will warm up and get a lot of pleasure from our next meeting. Our own Joan McKinney will be our demonstrator. Joan is a multi-award winner for her lovely watercolors (and oils) and a member of the NJWCS, the GSWS, and other prestigious groups. Many of you have seen her demonstrate before and know you are in for a treat! Monday, November 24th, 7:30 pm, at the Somerset County Library, is the time to come. Judy Hummer and Rita Gorky will be Hospitality and we thank Judy and Rita.

FLASH! President Linda Arnold becomes a (first-time) grandma! Cassidy Louise Weber was born October 7th at 5 pm and she weighed in at 6lbs. 1 oz. Dick Arnold, aka the Liberty Corner Santa Claus, becomes grandpa! Congratulations to all!

The holidays mean celebrating with our friends and so you won't want to miss RVAA's FANTASTIC HOLIDAY DINNER, Monday, December 8th. Doug Axmann has once again kindly agreed to chair the event (Way to go, Doug!). It will be at McCarthy's, which we always enjoy. From 22 East you turn right onto Finderne Avenue, and when you get to the second light you turn right onto Main Street and McCarthy's is almost immediately on your left. You simply must come; we always have good talk, good food, and lots of extras. Plus we all are full of holiday spirit and togetherness with our artist buddies! Cash bar starts at 6:00 and you can choose your menu when you get to the restaurant, with beef, seafood, and a vegetarian dish all part of the offerings. Of course this is all prefaced by a humungous all-you-can-pile on your prechilled plate salad bar. Coffee, tea, and desert after. Yes, we will have our infamous white elephant or similar gift exchange, that is, a white elephant or gift worth $5. - $10, gift-wrapped, and ready to party on home to your house. A little entertainment/diversion will be provided by a couple of our members, maybe you? Any members who wish to share a holidayish bon mot or two, please do! All this for only $27.00. Please send a check made out to RVAA to Doug at 16 Schoolhouse Lane, Somerville, NJ. 08876 by December 8th. (Thank you, Doug, for chairing this!)

Lots of HOLIDAY DOINGS going on in December (note that this Newsletter serves both months). You will find the rules for our month long show at the Somerset County Library at the end of this Newsletter. You can have small works and large. Lots of people come to the library; inevitably some buy. As usual, we need showsitters and there are always more hours than showsitters, so feel free to volunteer even more time. It happens each year-an impulse buyer will find no one at our desk, and then the impulse to buy leaves. And while you showsit you can bring your cards and prints to sell (originals only for hanging, except for two prints). MARY CREASY will be helping me again this year and I thank her for that!

ATTENTION PLEASE! Bridgewater Township will have the official opening of their brand new beautiful Town Hall/Administration building in early January. There will be art; anyone who lives in Bridgewater or anyone who is (or was?) a student of a Bridgewater teacher can be a part of this month long show and the opening. Ideally the committee would like photos or digital pictures or CDs for the jury to see, but they can use a few works from each artist (!) and really large ones as well as medium size. Please-if you are interested in this show, snail mail or email me, if you haven't already responded. I will see that you get more information as soon as it comes. If I do not get a response RVAA will lose this fabulous chance. Are you interested, and can you have several works available? Original paintings and pastels, original prints, like etchings and wood block prints (not photo prints, giclees, or lithographs done by a printer), digital works, and photography are all eligible.

Several sad things have happened recently.

Dick Canty wanted to let us know that RVAA member Thelma passed away on July 15 as a result of complications from leukemia. Dick said, "Thelma really enjoyed coming to the RVAA meetings at the library. We will all miss her very much. I thought that you and other members of RVAA would like to know about her passing." Thelma was a very talented artist and many of you know her work and also were in the show at the Jewish Community Center on Talamini Road which she so ably ran.

Angela Fehrenback (82) died Oct. 14 at Somerset Medical Center. She was the former owner and operator of Milady's Emporium in Warren and The Children's Store in Basking Ridge, and a member of the Bridgewater Garden Club, as well as RVAA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Arc of Hunterdon Foundation, 1322 State Rt 31, Suite no.5, Annandale, NJ, 08801. We all remember Angela's lovely work and her cheerful presence at her meetings and her participation each year in our Holiday Show. Your editor especially remembers some of the lovely work she had been doing on clayboard.

President Linda Arnold's mother just passed away on November 4th. Linda wrote "Just a note to dear friends and family....my Mother passed away today...she was nearly 101 yrs old.....Thank God for her life and her love." Your editor feels consoled that she lived to see the birth of Cassidy Louise and also the publication and arrival of Linda's book at her 100th birthday last fall---a great lady.

The Raritan Valley Arts Association sends its heartfelt sympathy out to the family members who are dearly missing their loved ones.
