William Gilbert
William works primarily in watercolor and mixed media in collage.
He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduate school at Seton Hall University.
He has studied with J Johnson (oils), K Schwartz (watercolor) and D Patton (watercolor)
He has been painting for 30 years and been involved in numerous shows both juried and non-juried. He Received awards at many of the shows from the first (Plainfield Festival of the Arts - 1st place) until now.
Most of his recent work reflects his full time involvement in protecting the environment.
The watercolors are based on the beauty in nature especially water and sea life.
The technique of doing collage is not new but his approach has evolved into using this in an almost photorealistic technique. The background is acrylic or watercolor. The pieces of paper (100 or more) are torn by hand and then soaked with watercolor. Later, they are torn again and applied to the art board with matt media. Then the entire collage is covered in protective acrylic.
